If you used to like Carmageddon and you are thinking to yourself, "Oh, a new Carmageddon, I really want to check it out." I would advise you not to. It is not a Carmageddon game in any sense. Some of the gameplay is similar moreso to Twisted metal because it focuses on weapons and strictly on the racing. But carmageddon was always less of a racing game, and more a destruction game.
Unlike the orginal Camrageddon games, In carmageddon: Rogue Shift you don't win by destroying opponents (unless it's a boss fight) and you can't win by completing the obsurd "kill all pedestrians on the map" goal like in previous games. That's not to say that mechanic is essential, but having the freedom to mess around with the mayhem and wild upgrades was what made Carmageddon fun, and you didn't have to do the race to win.
This game doesn't have any of that. The destruction isn't exciting. The races are linear. There's no 'Max' anymore. The music is okay, but nothing special. It's not a Carmageddon game. It's a racing game with guns whose developers licensed the name 'Carmageddon' to grab your attention.
I'm all for remakes and improving on a formula, but when you change the whole character and style of the game, just make a new IP.

First of I'd like to thank all of you for your support, all those gifts. Means a lot. Thought I'll be the only one here, but no. I'm happy Carma legacy still means something to you.
I've created this group so people could spill it out without harassment from the "developer's" side. If you wish - jop in: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/roguesht
Back to the game.
Carmageddon: Rogue Shift — as a game.
Carmageddon: Rogue Shift — as CARMAGEDDON… a confused, slow, weightless mess.
I’m not reviewing this as “just some arcade car game.”
I’m judging it as a Carmageddon title.
And wow… it took me 34 minutes to start yawning.
That’s with me actively trying to give it a chance.
That’s with me being a fan of the franchise.
That’s with me liking roguelikes.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
❌ Driving & Speed — they picked the WORST part of Max Damage and made it the core
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Instead of learning from past mistakes, they doubled down on them.
✖ Slow cars
✖ Sluggish acceleration
✖ Awkward, clumsy handling
✖ Zero sense of power or momentum
They took the most criticized part of Carmageddon: Max Damage — the slow, awkward driving —
and built the entire game around it.
Driving doesn’t feel brutal.
It doesn’t feel heavy.
It doesn’t even feel chaotic.
It just feels bad and slow.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
❌ Collisions & Pedestrians (Zombies, technically… I guess)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Remember when running people over in Carmageddon actually felt impactful?
Yeah, forget that.
✖ Zombies walk in the air
✖ They spawn in weird, immersion-breaking spots
✖ Hitting them feels like colliding with fog
✖ Your car doesn’t react — no weight, no resistance, nothing
You’re not mowing down bodies.
You’re driving through badly animated background props.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
❌ Car destruction… or rather, car evaporation
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Destroy an enemy vehicle and what happens?
Does it crumple into twisted metal?
Does it remain as wreckage?
Does it become part of the chaos?
Nope.
✖ It just disappears into thin air
No aftermath. No battlefield. No sense that anything actually happened.
Just poof — like the game is cleaning up evidence of its own design.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
❌ Tracks & environments — aggressively boring
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✖ Nothing visually memorable
✖ No landmarks
✖ No interesting routes
✖ No “OH DAMN I FOUND A CRAZY PATH” moments
You don’t explore.
You don’t experiment.
You just drive around thinking about how fast you can finish the match and stop playing.
The only real motivation the game gives you?
Grind the Battle Pass and log off.
Yes. A Battle Pass.
In Carmageddon.
And it feels like it was copied straight out of Helldivers 2’s homework, but with none of the charm.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
❌ Roguelike? Technically. Interesting? Not even close.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I love roguelikes. That’s the only reason I didn’t instantly refund.
I even thought:
“Okay, maybe I’ll grab it someday at 95% discount.”
Not anymore.
It functions as a roguelike in the most mechanical, checkbox way possible.
✖ Generic upgrades
✖ Predictable runs
✖ No wild builds
✖ No “this run went insane” moments
It’s a roguelike the same way instant noodles are “cuisine.”
Technically correct. Spiritually empty.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
❌ Music — somehow perfectly matches how bland everything else is
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The soundtrack is vague, lifeless, background noise.
No aggression.
No hype.
No identity.
And yet… it fits the game perfectly.
Because it sounds exactly like the gameplay feels:
dull, flat, and forgettable.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
❌ Technical & design jank everywhere
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✖ Physics feel inconsistent
✖ Impacts lack feedback
✖ World feels unstable and half-finished
✖ General “this needed more time and more talent” energy
This doesn’t feel like a bold new direction.
It feels like a prototype that accidentally shipped.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
❌ Dev attitude (the cherry on top)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I got into a heated, aggressive argument with the devs about the state of the game.
Not polite. Not diplomatic. Very blunt.
Their response?
Ban. Conversation over.
No real discussion. No thick skin. Just ego.
At one point it even looked like they tried to sneak in a petty in-game jab aimed at me personally.
I never even found it — and honestly, I don’t care anymore.
If that was the intention, it’s not clever.
It’s just small, insecure energy from people who take criticism more personally than broken design.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
VERDICT
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
As a game — slow, bland, generic.
As Carmageddon — a complete misunderstanding of what made the series fun.
It took 34 minutes for me to get bored.
That’s the most honest metric I can give.
★☆☆☆☆
❌ Not recommended for Carmageddon fans
❌ Not recommended for fans of physics-based destruction
❌ Not recommended for roguelike fans expecting creativity
❌ Not recommended for anyone looking for speed, impact, or chaos
If you want real Carmageddon — replay the old games.
They’re older, uglier… and still have more weight, more personality, and more fun than this ever manages.
Refunded.
**“Oh, and one last thing for your convenience: if you actually want a good vehicular combat game, just go play FUMES instead. It may look visually simpler, but in every other way it’s a hundred times better than this. Funnier, way more dynamic, with awesome OST. I personaly will go and re-complete it.
And when it comes to roguelikes with genuinely interesting mechanics, there’s no shortage of those either — Steam is overflowing with them.”**
UPD for developer
I was considering to drop my review of a Carmageddon game but keep the game because I love roguelikes. 30 minutes was more then enough for me to see this game is a mess as a roguelike. You convinced me to refund it. I made detailed review of it. If you don't like people criticising your product, don't publish it. You have a solid list of low grade games. My fault? Sometimes it's good to use mirror.
The three pillars holding up the 190 players still in-game.
The three pillars holding up this failure.
First — Developer behavior.
Wildly unprofessional. Ban people, then sit in your little bubble like a pack of hyenas, trash-talking from safety.
And lying on top of that — which honestly surprised me more than anything.
Second — The game itself.
Shallow. Not built to last. Lazy design that completely fails to hold the attention of the exact audience this game’s name was supposed to attract.
Third — And most important: the legacy.
The legacy of this franchise was treated like something to be wiped with and thrown away in the crudest possible manner.
And if you, the 34 “geniuses” behind this, are reading this — and I know you are —
ask yourselves:
“How did it end up like this? What exactly went wrong?”
After all the past discussions, I honestly doubt your ability to answer those questions.
But hey — you can always come ask me.
I’ll explain it calmly, clearly, quietly… and without aggression.
Enough is enough, girl.

This is Carmageddon 64 all over again. Swapping pedestrian humans for zombies to be greenlit for the Nintendo shop, for no reason since the Switch version runs and looks like ass.
Another parallel is that the PC version looks like ass too. An in between of cell shaded and realistic visuals corroded by a disgusting amount of chromatic aberration and blur even when the motion blur option is turned off. Perhaps this is done to obscure the low detail of the zombies and textures in general.
The soundtrack is like Mick Gordon from Temu. Mindboggling that they did not reach out to Fear Factory, at this point in time I'm sure Dino would be willing to do the soundtrack for 20 bucks and a subway sandwich.
Car physics and combat feel like they tried to copy burnout but applied the concept to the boat Hulk Hogan commandeered in Thunder in Paradise back in the 90s, but hey at least Hogan had the balls to be stupid and embarassing in his portrayal for the purpose of being fun and unapologetic about it.
Know what else had balls in the 90s? The OG Carmageddon which this new title clearly doesn't have, sharing only the tile name because honestly this feels like an independent idea that was glued to the Carmageddon name for brand recognition. Make a good game first, then try to stick to a known franchise if you want because nobody cares what name your game bears if it is garbage. Hell the roguelite part doesn't even sound like a bad idea, but the execution is poor, major example being that the very first thing you see when you hit new game is a battle pass kind of progression, we're sick and tired of this shit.

I was debating a lot weather or not to write a review of this game. With all honesty, I'd give this a middling score rather than a recommended or not.
I'm an old gamer, and remember playing Carmageddon 1 & 2 a lot. Probably this is my strongest point against it. If you remember the old games, expecting the same things, this is not at all those games.. Other reviewers pointed out, that the old game was open world, enemies were actively tried to score pedestrians instead of doing the race, tried to wreck others.. It was a controversial destruction game.
This is a peckless ironed out racing game with unremarkable cars and enemy racers.. Technically a good game, but not a good Carmageddon game. It would have greatly benefited from calling it anything different, even making their own IP. If Developers would have been honest, they'd have called it anything else and say we loved carmageddon, we are making a racing game similar to it, but not an open world destruction game, just a racing game.
When I said technically good, I meant graphically nice, explosions are nice, some manouvers like ramming cars are good too. It was running at capped 75 FPS in everything maxed out and no upscaling, no graphical or other bugs that I can report. It didn't crash or shown any other obvious bug. It's a racing game, and it achieves that..
I didn't like the progression in the game - the meaningless choices on a tree, and that you had to restart every time - that made me feel like I'm not progressing at all.. Unlocking cars were joyless, since the cars have lost all personality, their drivers are not shown, they are not interesting or unique.. You cannot customize them either, it's akin to a roguelike were you start from 0 every time you loose..
It lacks open maps, the pedestrians are meaningless zombies with no impact on anything - as others put it: it's like fog you drive through..
There's no provocative elements in the game, barely any blood, and no personality of the enemies, the bosses or the world / pedestrians..
In summary: Technically good, just not a Carmageddon game, because it's missing Carmageddon's entire personality, purpose, charm, provocativeness etc.
